Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - The Last Apprentice
This book is really great and it is kinda freaky but its a real page turner. Once you start you wont be able to stop. It's about Thomas J Ward and his apperticeship with the county spook. I would like a house boggart.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - execellent reading, not for kids only
The Spook's Secret is the third part of a story told by Thomas Ward, who as a youngster is apprenticed to a Spook, a somewhat elder man, who fights all kind of demons ("boggarts"), witches and ghosts. The protagonists are already given but also important is Alice, a young witchmaiden, who counterbalances the dreadfull adventures in the dark and the mother ("Mam") of Tom who plays a role, being not only human. The story is full of emotions, a good cast, characters an creatures alike, and although fiction for most of its part credible. In a way this is trilogy, it helps to read the very first two books (Spook's Apprentice and Spook's Curse) to understand the last one, because the main persons are there and in each book they are followed up to their gradution, discovering something new from them of something old. Anyway, I looked forward to the third part, having enjoyed the other two tremendously. I am certainly no kid anymore but not in the least ashamed to admit that I am a true fan. Joseph Delaney knows who to tell an old fashioned tale and to weave a plausible plot. Good reading, especially after nighttime. Have fun, when Harry Potter is nowhere in sight.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent Spooky'ness!
"The Spook's Apprentice", and the sequel "The Spook's Curse" are excellent entertainment! They are in fact quite scary, so I wouldn't recommend them to kids that are too young (personally I'd say 11+) or prone to nightmares.

The main character Thomas Ward is both credible and very human! The storytelling flows well, and you are quickly caught up in the story. The County comes alive before you, as you partake in Thomas' journey towards becoming a Spook - the medival equivalent of Ghostbusters :-) Only this is far more gloomy and sinister.

There's also humour and suspense in these books, and even as an adult i read them both in 4 days, and I'm now annoyed that the third book won't be out before April!

The series has a very interesting take on good and evil - you choose your own path, and if you try hard enough, maybe you can direct the people you care about away from the dark side.

There are also some interesting points on dealing with fear, narrowminded people and well.. boggarts, whitches and ghosts!

I like the fact that apart from a few villains, things in these books are "grey-shaded". Good witches exist (benign), and the Spook has a pet boggart that cooks, cleans and protects the household. The "good guys" have faults and make bad choices.

So order the books, wait for a stormy night, make a huge amount of coffee or hot chocolate, and crawl under the covers and be spooked! (in the best sense of the word:-)

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Simply Brilliant!
Thomas Ward and the Spook have to attend a funeral in Priesttown, and the name really describes the town. It seems half of the occupants are indeed priests. Which is unfortunate for Thomas and the Spook, becuae the visiting Inquisitor would very much like to meet them. But this is only half of the story, the Spook is really there to take care of some "unfinished business", namely the Bane, who likes to press his victims to death, which is exactly what it would like to do to the Spook and his apprentice. Enter, Alice, the witch, and as usual, she is truly the catalyst to the story, and without her "end justifies the means" antics, and Thomas's bravery, all would again be lost and the County would suffer to no end. A really brilliant story, with some background given on "Mam" really makes this a satisfying sequel to the first. A must read for those who enjoy a good "ghost story" that is well written. A bit darker than the Potter books, but that is what makes this series better! I hope Alice remains a prominent character in all the books!

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - FANTASTIC
