My wife recently introduced me to the Incarnations of Immortality series. When I finished the first, On a Pale Horse I was blown away. It was so much better than any of the Xanth novels. I moved quickly to the second, Bearing An Hourglass, and was slightly disappointed (it was sluggish, but very good). I moved on to a slightly better With a Tangled Skein. We haven't found a copy of the 4th book Wielding a Red Sword yet, so I skipped ahead. Just yesterday I finished the 5th book, "Being a Green Mother." All I can say is "D@mn!!"
The final chapter absolutely blew me away. The series, so far, is excellent (even when sluggish). The last chapter of this book is so powerful and moving that it drove me to tears. (Only 2 other books have ever done that.)
One warning though, if you can avoid it, don't read the blurb on the back of the book. I felt like it gave too much away.

The book is part of a great series, but this particular installment is luke warm by comparison. There's plenty of exposition, as well as loose ends in the story line being tied up, but it doesn't seem as fun to read as the rest of the series.
After reading the book I found out why. If you read the authors notes you find out that Piers Anthony was tired of writing the series, and while he knew he had to write a final book to give the series an ending, he didn't want people constantly bugging him to start writing the series again (like what happened with his Xanth series.) Therefore he purposely made this book a less enjoyable read.
Later inspiration struck and he continued the series with For Love of Evil.

Moon daughter rock chick has unfair advantage.
Orb, the daughter of Luna, joins a band. Handy to have the supernatural singing voice for times like these. The two aforementioned characters appear in other book in this series.
As per usual, Satan gets involved with some scheming, and this time it is of the magical music variety. In over her head, she asks for help from Chronos.
Eventually Gaea power turns the head of the Lord of Evil.

Orb knew there was something special, something otherworldly, about her musical ability. When singing and playing her harp, she senses a gathering of power she can never quite grasp fully, but dedicates her life in search of the llano, the true song of nature. Her quest leads her around the world, finding and losing love, and ultimately she assumes the role of the Incarnation of Nature. But what about the fortuneteller who, when she was still a little girl, prophesied that Orb would marry Evil?
I remember being blown away at this book's climax the very first time I read it in high school. This time around it wasn't quite as impressive, as some aspects of Anthony's writing style have become irritating to the more experienced reader in me. There is no natural progression to any of the relationships, and as a result they are hardly believable. The spoken dialogue is awkward, written in a style that seems far too formal, even accounting for an alternate reality. Despite its flaws, I'm still going to finish re-reading the series.

This book wasn't my favorite, but it certainly wan't the worst one in the Incarnations of Immortality line. I enjoyed all of these books and found the overall idea clever and inspired. There is mirth and irony ruinning through all of this authors books that I really enjoy. This was a lovely read and a great continuance of the whole series.
