What a lovely book. This is just a simple story about a man who was born illegitimate. Tye's mother was a prostitute and because of this he has been an outcast his entire life. There were probably 3 people in his whole town who have treated him with respect. Meg was one of those few people.
After the civil war, Tye comes home hoping to prove himself to the whole town by starting a packing plant. Meg is mourning her husband, Joe's, death but also in danger of losing their ranch. She has very little help and no money for the quarterly banknote. Tye seems to be the only real eligible man in town so she proposes a marriage of convenience. He will be co-owner of the ranch if he promises to help her and she will help him with his dream of starting a packing plant. Tye can't believe his good luck. He will have property, a packing plant and beautiful Meg who he has always admired.
Along the way a child is thrown into the mix, the townspeople snub Tye and Meg and they both learn to trust and love each other. A very charming story with no unneeded plot devices.

Its a small thing. Just one word, but since its sprinkled throughout the story, it was very distracting. . I'm guessing it must be some kind of Nebraska slang meaning temporary employee on a ranch. I probably would have called them "temps". I kept filling in representatives, reprobates, and republicans. None seemed to fit well. Let's see. How about Ranch Employee Pending? OK, I'll use that in my head through the rest of the book. Other than that annoyance, this is a nice sweet story. I wanted to smack Meg for being so insensitive to Tye's feelings. Apparently, she was very pretty, since he adored her regardless.

JOE'S WIFE is a compassionate and sensitive read that will delight every romance reader! Meg Telford Hatcher passions are pleasantly wakened to the low-born, big- hearted Tye Hatcher and she discovers dreams do come true after all.

I've read & enjoyed several of Cheryl St. John's historical romances, but never considered her a "keeper" before. Something was always "off" about the other stories (The Secondhand Wife, Tenderfoot Bride, Sweet Annie).
Well, I just read this book, and I have to admit it -- finally, her writing; the characters; their emotions and motivations, all came together for me. This is an excellent historical romance with a great (yet very simple) plot & a really sympathetic hero and heroine. Highly recommended!

Joe's Wife has been wonderfully reviewed already but let me say that I agree with them. This is one of the most endearing stories I've read. Tye is a true hero just by being himself and putting others very first regardless of how they treated him. Meg is wonderful heroin because she is loyal and non-judgemental. What a great job Cheryl did with this story. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. It is a keeper for my shelf. I highly recommend it. And it is true...you will need some tissues.
