Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Though it hadn't killed him, the gunshot wound to his chest was going to keep Sheriff Aaron McBain out of commission for a while.

So he spent his days thinking about where he'd seen Susannah Carvel's face before.

By the time he'd recovered enough to recall that it had been on a Wanted poster, he couldn't believe that she was guilty of any crime. Let alone murder!

Susannah claimed that she'd been framed, but he would need to buy some time to prove her innocence. Giving her his name was the only way Aaron could think of to keep her safe from harm and silence the local tongues whose gossip might expose her. And he was beginning to realize that protecting Susannah had become the only thing in the world that truly mattered.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - I couldn't finish it.
Unfortunately, I got to page 220 and had to stop reading it. It just wasn't doing it for me, which surprised me because the other books I've read by Carolyn Davidson, I LOVED. This one just didn't go anywhere, and was too much telling and not enough action. Too much of them going back and forth on how much they loved the other, basically. It kept being repeated. But this won't deter me from reading her other books.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - NOT AS ACTION PACKED AS I LIKE -
Sheriff Aaron McBain - got shot and got saved - by Miss Hattie.
Anna Whitfield was a lowly nurse whose face was the very first vision Aaron saw as he opened his eyes.

I am not quite clear how their attraction grew - but Miss Hattie was willing to help it along.
The Sheriff had a nagging suspecion that he had seen Anna before.

Well trouble did start with someone being after Anna and Aaron decided to best protect her by marrying her.
Anna, who turns out to be Susannah Carvel, a widow suspected of killing her husband wants desperately to move on west.

Someone wants her dead - that is after they find out what she knows about her late husband's business.
It is an interesting but almost tame plot [but whose life is really on edge all the time?] - excellent characters - just a little too long without a good old fashion shootout. [guess I am a bit blood-thirsty when it comes to the villians]

It was an enjoyable read if you just want to pass the time.

Rated by buyers 1 out of 5 stars - boring boring boring
This is one of only 3 books that I have not been able to finish. I couldn't care less about the characters. I was so disappointed because I have waited for this book for long. I LOVE Carolyn Davidson, but it never caught my interest at all.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - exciting late nineteenth century police procedural romantic suspense
In 1878 in Ottawa Falls, Colorado, Sheriff Aaron McBain finds himself in a hospital looking at a beautiful nurse Anna Whitfield. Anna panics that Aaron will know her real identity Susannah Carvel, the widow of a senator murdered in DC; she is the only suspect.

When Aaron recovers enough to leave the hospital, Anna remains his nurse. He knows who she is having seen her face in the newspaper coverage of her spouse's homicide and on wanted posters. The lawman is convinced Anna is innocent and offers her a shocking deal. She marries him so he can keep the woman he cherishes safe as he believes the real culprit will come for her, buy her time away from the law and also investigate who killed Senator Carvel.

HAVEN is an exciting late nineteenth century police procedural romantic suspense though Aaron's compulsive means of keeping Anna safe seems extreme until the audience realizes he would risk anything even his life for the woman he loves. Readers will wonder if the hero is thinking with the wrong head as evidence seems to insist she is a grey widow. The story line is fast-paced as the duo balance keeping her away from the unknown adversary and other law enforcement officials while also falling in love.
