Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:

With nothing left to wager but her innocence, the wily cardsharp 'Evening Star' stares across the poker table at the killer who destroyed the two people she loved most in the world ... and deals the winning hand to a rugged, unsuspecting stranger.

Matt 'Reno' Moran can’t believe that the conniving beauty he 'won' in a card game has run off with all his winnings -- including the map to a gold mine. He should never have trusted Evelyn Starr Johnson, a tawny-haired lovely hardened by poverty and loss. But the temptress cast a spell on him, making him careless by enflaming his passions as no woman ever has before. And now the only way Reno can reclaim what is rightfully his is by joining forces with the scheming, remarkable lady on a perilous treasure hunt that could cost the handsome sharpshooter everything ... including his heart.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Loved it!
Spoiler warning;)
This is the second Lowells book I've read, and I liked it as much as the very first one (Only his), even though the story of both book is almost the same. But I loved it anyway. I liked the spunky heroine. She was honest, spoke her mind, brave, etc, and all this without becoming unreasonably stubborn as heroines in other books often do. And Reno... Yummy:) I liked him in Only his, and he is the reason I read this book before Only mine, which is subsequent on my must-read list. What I didn't like about him, anyway, was the fact that he never believed in Eve, no matter what she said or did, and even in the end, he suspected the worse of her. She should make him beg a bit more when he came crawling after her;)
I liked it that the characters from other books appeared in the story, and it was done so well, they fitted in the story perfectly, not like in some other books, where the story becomes too crowded by all the previous heroes.
I read this book in one afternoon. A great read, I would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a refreshing romance set in wild west. It is great to read such a book after all of the stories that take place in London or England in general. And it makes you want to go and see all the places and mountains and everything that is described in the story.
And the sentence that made me laug out loud: Who's goona play the trout now?? LOL:)
Go and buy this book! You won't be sorry!

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Formula
I have read the whole "only" series. They follow a formula. Tough, abusive male, innocent abused heroine. He always thinks the worst of her, mistreats her, has sex with her. She falls in love and lets him. They misunderstand something the other one did. They separate. He comes after her. They reunite and live happily ever after having kids.

Having said all that. I must have like something about them because I did read them all. After the males understand they are caught, they start behaving themselves. Nobody said this was like real life. Perhaps that is what I like - the escape from reality.

This series is recommended for just that - escape and happy endings.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Crooked poker, lost gold mine, outlaws hunting you
All the makings of a great western. We've got the crooked poker game between saloon girl, outlaws and a loner gunslinger. Map to a lost gold mine. A ranch in the foothills of the Colorado mountains, a trek through indian country, and beautiful descriptions of the land.

Unfortunately, we're saddled with a good secondary character of past novels turned into an abusive, idiotic Alpha hero and a sympathetic heroine who is as strong defending herself as milktoast. Reno's interest in gold only comes after her blackmails Eve into telling him about the gold mine, under the threat of raping her because he wants her. She keeps telling him she's a virgin, an orphan and former bond servant. His refusal to accept that leads to much pain and hardship for her. And yet, this doormat heroine forgives him for it all.

The final straw for me came in the end. Reno's desire to "protect" her from a crumbling mind yet dig gold himself, inadvertantly left Eve alone and trapped in the camp with a bunch of gold bars and outlaws waiting to storm them, rape her and steal the gold. Then when she does the heroic thing to save him, he still distrusts her.

Eve should have gone off with her share of the gold, set up in some fancy city back east, raised the baby they inevitably made, and forced Reno to grovel at her feet for a year trying to get back in her good graces. He clearly wasn't a man worthy of any woman's trust. Just another randy fool.

The only thing saving this story is the lush description of the landscape and gold hunting. And the brief appearances of far better couples in the Only series: sister Willow & her husband Caleb, and Wolfe & Jessi.

Go read the very first two novels in the Only series. Caleb and Wolfe at least deserve their women.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Just OK
This book is about Eve losing a bet (herself) at a game of cards - and in turn losing to Reno, and there search for gold. I thought this book just a tad boring so I skimmed through this one. It could have been so much better but its characters seemed one-dimensional. There was no background to either one of there past lives that formed the way they were. Reno was a - I don't know if they ever said what his profession was and Eve was a orphan - end of story. Mrs Lowell is a great writer and her books are fairly good, this one fell flat for me but at the same time was not a complete waste of a read. So if you have nothing else to read give it a try you might like it better that me.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A series I read over and over
When I run out of new things to read and go to my bookshelf for a classic, I always find myself picking up the "Only" series. Even though I usually prefer contemporary romance, these are some of my favorites, because Lowell makes you care about the characters not just through one book, but through six. (I'm including Autumn Lover and Winter Fire in that count.) These are heros to fall for in any era, and heroines that the reader can respect, which can be tough to find in historicals. One piece of advice - before you start reading these, stock up on biscuits. KFC, Pillsbury, doesn't matter; once you start this series, you will have a craving for buttermilk biscuits.
