Elizabeth Lowell writes with a fast, fiery pen. She's equally at home creating page-turners in a contemporary setting or taking us back in time. One advantage in writing historical novels is that their appeal is more lasting than a story taking place today. Contemporary tales are prone to easily becoming dated by the mention of anything from a car to the gun used in a robbery.
Although released in 1993 Forbidden is as fresh now as it was then, especially when given a stunning reading by Sarah Scott. For this listener, hers is a new narrating voice, and appropriate for this title. Scott has a young voice with an attractive huskiness. As our heroine is not supposed to be of high birth, this reader is wise enough to avoid affectations in speech, and comes across clearly leaving an impression of both innocence and strength.
If you favor medieval romance with a tad of fantasy Forbidden is for you. Amber is a young woman whose birth prophecy included a marvelous love but a love that would surely be followed by death. She is both perplexed and surprised when a wounded warrior is brought to her, after all she is quite alone in the world having "no more kin than the wild autumn wind."
Their attraction is immediate and their passion unrestrained. However, when the warrior recovers his memory he sees Amber as his enemy. Yet she is the one who healed and loved him, will there truly be death?

It's lacking just a LITTLE here in "Forbidden," and wasn't quite as breath-taking as Lowell's very first book "Untamed." I almost felt as though Lowell had difficulty getting inspired for the 1st few chapters. The details, descriptive language, and conversation between the characters just wasn't quite the quality of "Untamed." By conversation, I mean that the characters were speaking too modern for the time era. For example, here's a quote from the book:
"I don't know" he said flatly. "But I know that I have met them."
More authentic and true to the time era (AND Lowell's talent) should have been:
"Nay, I know them not, yet I feel we are met before.
You get the idea! For those of us that are lovers & connoisseurs of medieval romance novels, the use of too modern language irritates and detracts from an excellent read. However, the good news.... Lowell's talent & inspiration seems to pick up in later chapters.
I would still recommend reading the book, because it was satisfying, and personally I like to finish book *series* when I start them. I am ordering "Enchanted" today, and I will hope that Lowell was fired-up to max potential in her writing for the last book in the series.

Several times I found myself speed reading to get through it faster. I did not care for the plot which was about a man with amnesia, who falls in love, hates her after he regains his memory, but returns to her in the end. Maybe this plot would be ok if done by another author, but it was not enjoyable the way it was done here. I also found the ending too abrupt. I would have preferred knowing what their life was like after they got together and how the alliances among Dominic, Erik and other warlords worked out. This is the second book I've read by this author. The very first book was The Secret Sister which I also did not like. I don't plan to read any more books by this author. Sexual content: moderate.

Amber the Untouched is a Learned (sorceress with some Druidic magic) woman. Her talents are similiar to a touch empath. When she touches a person she feels and sees their memories, which is often cripplingly painful for her. As a result she doesn't let anyone touch her and she earns the nickname of Amber the Untouched. At her birth was a prophecy predicting that she would one day lose her body, heart, and soul to a man who would bring her only death. The day comes when an injured man is brought to her with no memory. When she touches him his touch brings an ecstatic pleasure she has never before known. Concerned she recognizes that this is the man foretold at her birth who would bring about her doom. Unable to help herself, she continues to heal him and they soon fall in love and eventually they marry. But as the man she calls Duncan's memories begin to return she realizes that its highly likely that he is the man known as the Scots Hammer. He is an enemy to her people and would-be murderer of the man she loves like a brother Eric, the lord of the surrounding lands. When Duncan's memory returns he realizes his lack of knowledge has led him to betray his liege lord the Glendruid Wolf Dominic and go back on his betrothal to Ariane, a norman noblewoman. His love for Amber turns to hatred because she knew his identity and kept it from him; causing him to break sworn vows. He seeks to annul their marriage and instead marry Ariane. But he cannot let Amber go and decides to keep her for his mistress. But Amber feels Ducan's hatred each time he touches her and its like a thousand tiny cuts to her soul. Soon her soul will bleed to death and she will be no more unless Duncan will acknowledge his love for her and put aside his hatred.
This book made me cry it was so sad in places, and made me angry at the hero in the end for his complete unrelenting stupidity. It also didn't make much sense to me why he refused to be with Amber. Especially, at the end when the Lord he swore his oath to, Dominic, said it was okay if he was with Amber; allowing him to break his previous bethrothal to another woman. Even with Dominic's blessing Duncan still won't be with Amber which I thought was stupid when the whole reason he hates her is because she caused him to go back on his oath to Dominic in the very first place. So if the Lord, who he respects and owes loyalty to, agrees he should marry Amber, then what's the problem? But Duncan remains thickheaded and stubborn until he loses Amber. Personally, I thought he should have lost her permanently since he was so stupid, but they end up living happily ever after; which I thought was a bit too trite and pedestrian. It would have been much more tragic and heart wrenching (and well deserved) if Duncan had lost Amber forever. Despite the over used happily ever after ending this was a great book full of emotional turmoil. I highly recommend it.

I was dissapointed by this book...OK...let me start with the good aspects: 1. The storyline is original and creative, 2. the last 1/3 of the book when the author zooms into the characters' dillemas and true demons tearing them apart felt so real and intense it finally made my heart beat fast 3. She did not settle for a cliche ending which pleased me BUT ...BUT...BUT most of the book is pure and simple cheesy....no better word to describe it...maybe gooey, the dialogues between Amber and Duncan on the very first 2/3 of the book are at times simply disgusting...I have nothing against people gushing at each other in love...trust me...me and my husband are the lovey-dovey type BUT if my husband said the kind of stuff I read here...he wouldn't get any action for months...the whole talk about your sword, my sheath and sleek petals thing was appalling...How can anyone write a wild passionate sex encounter well when he still feels like he has to use childish nicknames for body parts and actions? Why can't we just stare at sex in the eye for what it is and just accept it, like adults? ....Anyways...back to the plot...it was also a bit confusing in the beginning...maybe that was meant to build up suspense but it didn't work....it just came accross as confusing even though it kinda makes sense in the end...it's too late.
I would not recommend this book.
