Amazon.com Review:
Lady Emma Wells-Finch is determined to cause a scandal. Nothing big, you understand, just enough to convince her pompous British suitor that she's not an eligible candidate for marriage. She's thinking along the lines of, oh, maybe a discreet tattoo. But when suspended Texas golf pro Kenny Traveler meets her plane at Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport, Emma decides that he's the perfect candidate to destroy her reputation.
Kenny, on the other hand--who desperately wants to be reinstated on the golf tour--is just as determined to keep a low profile and remain squeaky-clean. If Lady Emma weren't a close personal friend of the golf commissioner's wife, he'd never have agreed to squire her around town. Unfortunately for Kenny, his weakness for the British beauty is growing daily, and it seems as though Emma may have feelings for him as well. In a bizarre turn of events, wild man Kenny finds himself trying to keep the prim and proper British lady from causing a scandal the size of which even the lone-star state has never seen, and the results will leave you laughing with delight.
Below the hilarious dialogue that is Susan Elizabeth Phillips's trademark, Kenny, Emma, and the charming array of characters that populate this exceptional contemporary are warm and wonderfully human. Emma saves her Kenny and he saves her right back--never were two people more gloriously deserving of each other. --Lois Faye Dyer

In a need to satisfy my SEP addiction, I decided to pick up LADY BE GOOD -- a stand-alone book outside of the Chicago Stars series, but in conjunction with FANCY PANTS, one of her earlier novels.
Lady Emma Wells-Finch is the prim and proper (think Mary Poppins) schoolmistress of St. Gertrude's School for Girls in Great Britain. Armed and ready, she heads to Texas on a two-week mission to do some research for her book and loose her goody-two shoes reputation.
Not knowing that Kenny Traveler is one of the most celebrated and successful (until he gets himself suspended) sports players, Emma "hires" the pro-Golfer, as her tour guide/male escort in the hopes that he'll be able to help her become a certified wild child.
Kenny finds himself extremely attracted to Emma and tempted to take her up on her offer to help destroy her reputation. Unfortunately, being a bad boy is what got him suspended in the very first place! Knowing what's good for him, he attempts to lay low in order to get back in good standing with his mentor, Dallie Beaudine, as he holds the key to Kenny's future in golf. But why is Emma making this so hard for him to do?
The two characters conflicting intentions makes for a hilarious and amusing story.
Comical, romantic and saucy, LADY BE GOOD is yet another well-written, quick read by Phillips.

I'm a huge SEP fan. This was actually the very first book of hers i read that didn't involve any of the "Stars" football team plot. I've never been a football fan, and of course SEP made me one. ;-) And for this book, I am now much more interested in golf.
It was funny, and different, and it had a good ending. I love the way SEP writes. I fell in love with Kenny and adored Emma. Sure, they each made stupid mistakes or choices, or did things I would never do but that's what makes it a great work of fiction. This is now one of my favorite SEP books.

I admit that I was not in the best emotional state when I started this book and this was exactly the reason I picked it up; so that it would help lift my spirits. I don't know if that was the reason I didn't really enjoyed this book like SEP's football series or Kiss an Angel. I felt that Torie's (Kenny's sister) romance and Kenny's problems with his father took much space and the romance between Emma and Kenny almost fell in the background for long periods of time. Philips used the Emma's need to create a scandal, so that she could annul the marriage with the Duke of Beddington, to insert humour and sparks in a story that was too flat and excitement missing. I am sorry but I didn't find it that funny nor engaging as a story. Kenny and Emma were so suited for each other from the start (he was a very decent guy with only a wild childhood to account for after all), that there wasn't any real tension or reason to keep the story for long. Not a bad read, but SEP can do so much more than just nice. If you're new to SEP read Kiss an Angel or Nobody's baby but mine and Heaven, Texas first. They are fantastic reads.

The plot was weak...and the chemistry was off not by a whole lot but enough to make you feel like you don't need to stick around and finish the book! "It Had to Be You" is much better.
