Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
An ample, wide-ranging collection of primary sources, The Civil War and Reconstruction: A Documentary Collection opens a window onto the political, social, cultural, economic, and military history from 1830 to 1877. Particular attention is paid to social history; coverage of the experience of African Americans, women, and nonelites provides a well-rounded picture of the period. Substantial selections, careful editing, and helpful annotations make this collection an ideal supplement for your course on the Civil War and Reconstruction.

User popularity level: out of 5 stars

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Good collection of primary documents useful for accompanying a more complete chronology
Gienapp's document collection is extremely useful for research and historical argument papers. It is well-organized and he has also inserted extremely useful introductions to each piece, which is abridged to ideal length (average 1-1 1/2 pages) and written in nice large easy-to-read print. The collection is in chronological order and contains gems such as important speeches like the Freeport Doctrine and "Cotton is King," newspaper articles from the time period (detailing the Battle of the Ironsides, for example), and most of the other most important primary documents available from the era. Its lack of an index is somewhat frustrating, but overall, it is a great tool for research that every serious student of the civil war should have, although it is probably superfluous for a casual civil war buff. It's good for what it is, and don't buy it for what it's not.
