Somewhere between Amazons II and Heroic Visions I Salmonson lost the plot, rather literally. While the previous two anthologies were good and decent, you can see where the rot set in here, right in the introduction.
While pulp writers blah blah stylistically limited blah blah modern fantasy should evolve blah blah blah some of these writers here are poetic and beautiful blah blah want this anthology to be like Orbit New Dimensions blah blah blah blah blah.
Or, you get the picture. Fairly close to a recipe for limited, unsuccessful heroic fantasy, and that is exactly what you get here. Or, maybe stylistically it is nice, but story-istically it is poor. Fritz Leiber excepted, of course.
In fact, if pressed for time, just read the very first two, chuck the rest. Yolen's story is definitely worth it, though. Sometimes neither heroic, or fantasy, either.
