I have seriously enjoyed all of Elizabeth Moon's novels - was disappointed that this particular book included three of the Heris histories that I already had as singletons... was absolutely hoping that, with this title, I would be getting some more Serrano background.
Although her space opera is not up to the detail of David Weber's Honorverse (and I do like lots and lots of words), a female "misfit" is right up my alley...

I loved all three books - had a really hard time putting it down!

After reading the author's Paksannarion series I had fairly high hopes that this would at least be a book with a fair amount of pace and a decent storyline, even if the characters - like the Paks series - were to be somewhat lacking. No such luck. The characters barely approach the one dimensional, while the story - if you can call it that - moves along with all the speed of the erosion of granite being weathered by drizzle.
If you find watching an oak tree growing too exciting, then this is probably the book to help calm your nerves. Astonishingly tedious and utterly dire.

This book is an easy read. The adventures are simple, but(in the very first of the three parts)it shows a bit of the development of certain characters.
In a way this really is a horse-loving adventure book more suited to girls who are at that age.

This book is really, Hunting Part, Sporting Chance and Winning Colors all in one big book! If you love the Serrano/Suiza series this is a must have! This sets up all the history, the muder, the mystery, the politics and the past battles so that once we introduce Esmay Suiza into the circles of the Serrano navel family we know exactly where Heris Serrano has been. If you've read the books that center around Esmay Suiza, you definately need to read this book, it will give you a much clearer picture of what all is going on in the Regents Familia. This 3 books in 1 will also give you a window into why Admiral Serrano treats Suzia the way she does... SO all in all its definately worth the reading time and the cost of the book!!
