Product Description:
Most guides focus on treating diabetes, but don't address the reality of living with the condition. This book stands apart from the others, as it focuses exclusively on the person with diabetes, rather than solely on the disease. Diabetes experts Micahel A. Weiss, who lived with Type 1 Diabetes for more than 20 years, and Martha M. Funnell, an internationally-known diabetes educator, provide straight talk for those who want to take charge of their condition and construct a realistic plan for daily living.
Whether readers are newly-diagnosed or have been struggling with diabetes for years, this is the very first (and possibly, only) book they need. The authors understand that managing diabetes is all about an individual's daily choices: what to eat, what to take, whether to exercise, and how often to check glucose levels. Now readers can sort through their feelings, needs, and inclinations toward making these choices, and fashion a 'real-world' regimen that will provide an optimum quality of life. It will empower anyone to make the changes needed for living well with diabetes.

This was the very first book to read on diabetes and frankly I was quite disappointed. There is some basic info on diabetes in the very first chapter as well some good suggestions, but as the book goes on it focuses on one topic only - take charge of diabetes management, with an endless variety of suggestions, which I am afraid tell you pretty much the same thing. Kind of waste of paper and maybe it could have fit into two articles rather than whole book. The good part is you can read in in a few hours. There is also little inspiration the book can offer. Perhaps it's just me looking for a book with different qualities after managing my diabetes for more than 2 years now.
On the positive side the book is about both diabetes 1 and 2. I'd guess for an introduction though it might actually serve its purposes.

This is a welcome addition to the literature on diabetes, offering patients and families not only the necessary information they need to cope with this chronic illness but, more importantly, providing the reader with a sense of empowerment, a way to "adapt diabetes to fit your life instead of adapting your life to diabetes." Encouraging diabetics to take control of their lives, to individualize prescribed care, to manage their disease in a way that works for them sets this book apart. Its approach and methods are applicable to any chronic illness. Well-organized and beautifully written, it is also filled with personal comments making the reader feel he is not alone. It is outstanding - the best of its kind!

I was diagnosed with diabetes last February. I have read everything I can find about my disease since then. While I knew much of the information in this book, the authors have put a new slant on things, and I learned more about what I already knew. Good job, authors!

I have been caring for people who have diabetes for over 25 years and I'm always looking for really good diabetes books. This new book goes right to the top of my list. The title (The Little Diabetes Book You Need to Read) tells it all. This book is a perfect preparation for living with diabetes. It is beautifully written by two people who really know what they are talking about. If you have diabetes or if someone you love has diabetes, buy this book!

I am an RN that had cared for patients with diabetes in the hospital but really didn't "get it" until I spent a week with my brother-in-law as he recovered from one of many surgeries he has needed because of complications of his diabetes. I can't tell you how great it is to read a book that takes into account the complexities of each individual living with diabetes... physically, mentally and emotionally. This book is not only beautifully written and easy to understand but it offers a clear, flexible and guilt-free way to manage diabetes so that you and your family can focus on life. Many of the insights in this book can be applied to any chronic health issue. The title says it all....The Little Diabetes Book You Need to Read. Really! L Weisband
