I felt a bit blue as I finished FIRE STUDY, the third and final volume in Maria V. Snyder's Study Trilogy. Though she is currently working on a new series following a side character from the Study books, this is the last one to center on the adventures of Yelena, the convicted murderer, turned poison taster, turned diplomatic liaison. I felt blue because I'd been expecting more and I ended up finishing it more out of a feeling of obligation than because I was truly engrossed.
The story picks up shortly after the events of Magic Study leave off. Yelena, her brother Leif, and the mercurial Moon Man are busy trying to mop up the Soulstealer's mess and dealing with accusations from the Mage's Council. First Magician Roze Featherstone is calling for Yelena's head on a platter and there is little rest for the weary on the horizon. The problem is, very little happens from this point on. Or rather, very little new stuff happens.
What there is is page after page of no one believing Yelena that Roze really is That Evil. Page after page of people stabbing each other with curare left and right (and waking up from being stabbed). Page after page of no Valek. And when he is there Yelena's not letting him help her. Instead she spends the majority of her time worrying about his potential demise and trying to protect him from a threat he's much better equipped to deal with than anyone else in the book. Towards the last three quarters of the story, the characters do start to wake up and act like themselves. They begin to deal with some of the meatier issues hanging over them just as the book reaches its end. And I felt myself wondering what took them so long? And wishing that the wonderfully dark, emotional atmosphere and tension from Poison Study were present here. Because I missed them.

Loved it! I love the characters. They tend to develop, yet stay true to their nature. A great love story without being entirely focused around being a romance novel. I just hope this isn't the last in the series. :( There is just too much left to explore!

I become absolutely entranced by Poison Study, I couldn't keep myself from thinking about it wherever I was. Magic Study, too, was a powerful and interesting read with more than just action, but with the development of the character's emotions and relationships. Fire Study, however, was mostly just action. I kept waiting for more development with Leif or even Valek. It never really came. The book, while interesting and readable, tended to read like one big, long action sequence. While Yelena's character seeks to find the meaning of being a Soulfinder, there is really little else in the way of developing character's emotions and relationships. I think I was most disappointed by the cardboard representation of Leif. Nothing really seemed to emerge out of their relationship. Even Yelena's own self-discoveries seem to be drowned out by the constant action of the novel.
Would a recommend that you skip it? Absolutely not, it's still a valid part of Yelena's trilogy. However, I believe that it was my love for the previous two books that makes me give the novel 4-stars. I think that if this were a stand-alone novel, or had I not read the very first 2 books, I would mostly likely give the book a 2 or 3-star rating.
I love the world and characters that Snyder has created, regardless of this last book. When I learned that Snyder planned on continuing the story through Opal I can say that I was elated. All I can hope is that the book's format resembles Poison Study rather than Fire Study.

After the complex characters and great writing of Poison Study, Fire Study can't hold a "light" up to it. The plot is fine, but the writing just doesn't flow like the very first two books. The characters lose their depth, which makes them hard to connect to and to enjoy the thrill their adventures (since they don't seem to be experiencing much emotion themselves!). I also noticed as another reviewer did that the dialogue became more sassy and in my opinion, sloppy. Whereas in Poison Study, Synder did a great job of making every conversation charged with importance and emotion.
