Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:

Centuries ago Christ made a claim that disconcerts as many yesterday as it did then—he is the way of salvation. Ironically, he spoke these words to comfort his disciples on the night of his arrest. Richard Phillips is just one of six highly respected authors seeking to reaffirm these comforting words and other exclusive claims of Christianity for today’s reader.

Each chapter proclaims, defends, and explains the Christian truths that are most directly challenged by postmodern relativism. Our God is the God; Jesus is not merely a savior, but the only Savior; and the truth revealed in the Bible is divine truth. As readers grasp these essential ideas and their implications they will be able to witness powerfully by articulating these claims with clarity, conviction, and love.

Only One Way? guides us unerringly through the contemporary world of religious pluralism and points us to Jesus Christ alone as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Grasping the central truth that the Christian gospel is unintelligible apart from the uniqueness of Christ, these pages expound it in a variety of insightful ways. Here are six scholars and pastors boldly upholding the only kind of Christianity worthy of the name.”
Sinclair B. Ferguson,
Senior Minister, The First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina

“Although religious pluralism is often treated as a ‘postmodern’ phenomenon, it has always been the world’s most fundamental challenge to the gospel. The authors of this thoughtful work press us, as the apostles did, to stand against the world for the world’s sake. Only one way? At a time when many evangelicals don’t seem so sure, these writers help us to confidently answer yes!”
Michael Horton,
Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary California, Escondido, California

“There is a battle raging in the world today—it is a battle for truth. And in a day when the god of relativism governs hearts and minds throughout the world, Christians cannot be silent. This timely book calls God’s people to action. I am thankful the Lord has raised up faithful men to stand firm and proclaim boldly the truth about God’s truth.”
Burk Parsons,
Editor of Tabletalk magazine; Minister of Congregational Life, Saint Andrew’s Chapel, Sanford, Florida

Speaking in concert, the authors appeal to their contemporaries to avoid getting caught in the cultural rejection of biblical truth so prevalent in our post-modern neighborhoods and metropolitan Babels.

Chapter 1, David F Wells: One Among Many
'On the grounds that they have God 'within' them, 60% of Americans say that they do not need the Church. In life's crises, 56% say that they look for help from the 'power within', rather than to the God without.' pg 26

Chapter 2, Peter R Jones: One God
'Many Christians will be surprised to learn that the chief doctrinal attack in our time is directed not to the inspiration of Scripture or the deity of Christ, but to the doctrine of God....for many in our day, biblical theism is no longer the starting point of their thinking.' pg 45

Chapter 3, Richard D Phillips: One Savior
'Everywhere yesterday we hear: 'There are many ways to God'. Let us observe, at least, that Jesus taught the exact opposite: there are many ways to hell, He said, but ONLY ONE WAY to God.' pg 77

Chapter 4, Philip G Ryken: One Truth
'The same God who is the truth and does the truth comes to help us know the truth. Like everything else in the Christian life, knowledge of the truth only comes by grace. We know the absolute truth, not because of who we are, but because of who God is.'
pg 104

*In closing, Dr Ryken's exposition of 'A LIFE OF TRUE LOVE' is worth the price of this book alone and must rank as of the most unique prose in Christian memory. But I do not want to spoil your joy...zip!

Chapter 5, J. Ligon Duncan III: One People
'If you want to complain about a doctrine being unfair, then complain of the reward of heaven by grace. If ever there was an unfair doctrine, it is that. Hell, on the other hand, is the fairest doctrine in the world. This truth humbles us to the dust.' pg 116-117

Chapter 6, D.A. Carson: One Way
'Although we are not yet in consummated glory already, right now, among Christ's people, it has been declared, 'You cannot sin here. Sinning is not done here.' And when, poor, frail creatures that we are, we do sin, we return to the one place where there is hope: the Cross of Christ.' pg 141

One gets a feeling of inadequacy when faced with the overwhelming flood of cultural diversity and eclectical religion invading our lives today. In desperation we realize the sinister nature of this interwoven worldview, but are unable to confront it's tenets, or inept in standing firm in the faith, received by God's grace thru Christ Jesus.

It is therefore, with the purest motive of love, the highest good of charity in informing the Body of Christ, that these authors bring us theological brilliance as this - a faithful declaration of a triune God being the only wise, the only great, the only sovereign, the only true Author of life - even in unpopular times.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - An Apologetic Review : Updated a Year Later - July 14, 2008
A lot has changed in over a year since I very first wrote my review of the book. Also, since I have not been receiving a higher rating of benefical votes of my review, I decided to again read through portions of the book.

I again read David Well's introduction in full. His case is well said about the times we live in and how these times relate to Christianity. I think that my initial perception of the target audience for the book was to that of someone with an interest in Christianity. I was hoping for a good apologetic source. However, I can now see that the target audience is that of a faithful Christian. I see the book as a call for evangelicals' not to lose their direction in a world adrift.

In addition, I think that many Christian's are also concerned about the world adrift and "Only One Way?" is an answer to that concern. Would a Christian communicate the information contained in the book effectively to another? I do not know. But I hope with the love and understanding that many are searching for meaning in their life.

The initial review was as follows:

I purchased this source to see if it presents a defense of the faith or apologetic for our times. I found the source to be more of a defense of the faith for a present day Christian as an affirmation of the individual's personal Christian faith.

The apologetic presentation in the text is addressed to the post-modern era. However, I think that we live in a post-Christian or post-Christendom era. In this post-Christendom era there are many individuals that have been turned off by the public controversies within the Church that have been due to church leaders and ministry leaders failings and evangelical presure by Christians to gain convets.

I also think that we live in a consumer culture where individuals are able to choose religions, parts of religions or no religion at all. I do not think that many individuals think in polytheistic or pagan term as reported in the source but that they are looking to buy-in to a spirituality. In addition, the new generation - Generation Y - has changed their attitudes in ethics, metaphysics and philosophy of science and religion as compared to Baby Boomers and Generation X. This change is not addressed in the text.

Based on my above concerns about the era and cultures, I would not suggest that the source is an apologetic for our time.

However, I do recommend the source to a Christian as a text for personal affirmation of why they believe that there is only one way.
