There is a chronic disease that is ravaging our nation that you don't hear about in the news, but you do see its effects. It's called FATHERLESSNESS.
There is a generation now well into adulthood who come from broken homes, myself included. Much of the time the father is absent, as it was in my case.
Transitioning into manhood was difficult for me because I really didn't know what an authentic man was. I didn't know who I was, what I was supposed to do or be, or why I had such a hard time. As I grew, I realized that much of my struggle was due to the lack of a father leading the way. I felt as though I was in a jungle all by myself, hacking away at overgrown obstacles, trying to forge my own path. Had my father known what a real man was, he'd have stayed the course, a bit ahead of me, teaching me, fathering me, showing me how to navigate the path of life. But when a man fails his son, that son is forced to fight battles never intended for him.
Those battles touch every area of life: your view & value of marriage and commitments, relationships with parents, God, friends, siblings, children, dating/courting, education, career choices, character issues, morals, you name it. You've seen it. Probably even been touched by it. Like the crash of a falling tree that breaks the calm surface of a crystal-clear lake, a father failure causes damage with a ripple effect so strong that it wounds generation after generation. Thank God for guys like Stu who tell it like it is, call it what it is, and hold out the truth. He shows you the right target to aim for and gives you something to hold onto that will never fail: the very words of God, the ultimate Father.
This book is written by a "man's man." He was a college jock and a high-ranking officer in Vietnam. He's also a very well-studied pastor with a heart to see people living in God's will. In "Tender Warrior," Stu takes the reigns and shows you God's intentions for a man. He shares his own story, failures included. It's a strong foundation for others to stand on as they build their own lives. It's helped me a ton.
I also have benefitted from "Healing the Masculine Soul" by Dalbey, "To Own a Dragon" by Miller and "The Silence of Adam" by Crabb/Hudson/Andrews. There is hope!

Though the ideas are not new (it's all in the Bible) or unique, Stu does a great job bringing it all together in a way that helps the reader apply it to his life. Sometimes you just need someone to help get you remember that there is a model (Jesus) and with God's help we can improve the model that we present to our families and others who are watching.

I heard great things about this book. I was underwhelmed. Nothing really new here.
