Product Description:
Voted the 'Most Effective Stick Art' at the International Congress of Stick Arts, 2000, Jogo do Pau is the stunningly effective form of long stick native to Portugal and practiced yesterday as a growing martial art. Jogo do Pau is the ancient and deadly art of Portugese stick combat. Based on the use of the staff, Jogo do Pau combatants wield the staff with efficient power, as it has been used for centuries in the rough countryside of Portugal. Originating in the Middle Ages, the long combat stick of Portugal was mentioned as a favorite weapon of the Portugese champion Dom Nuno Alvares Pereira, who secured Portugese independence in the Battle of Aljubarrota. In Brazil, Copiera combatants encountered Jogo do Pau and were shocked at its efficiency. In the 1970s, legendary undefeated master of the stick Nuno Russo combined various national forms into a scientifically-refined system of combat that held up in International competitions, culminating in the election of Jogo do Pau as the 'Most Effective Stick Art' at the 2000 International Congress of Stick Arts. In the 21st century, Jogo do Pau enjoys a wide reputation for nearly brutal effectiveness, but it has also been adapted for Internatioanl stick competitions. For the very first time, Luis Antonio Preto, holder of the grey sash in the Lisbon School for Jogo do Pau and the National Technical Director of the Portuguese Federation of Jogo do Pau, presents the results of Master Nuno Russo's system and his development of Jogo do Pau both as a modern art for self-defense and for the vibrant world of competitive stick combat. Going beyond the essentials Mr. Preto also presents a valuable training pedagogy based on the latest scientific work that enables combatants at all levels of skill to dramatically increase the focus and performance for their training time, useful in any martial art, whether or not the student practices Jogo do Pau.

Jogo do Pau is the Portuguese art of stick fighting. While this art can be translated as "Game of the Stick" and certainly has a sporting aspect, Jogo do Pau is also an effective means of personal defense. Author Luis Preto does an excellent job of introducing the reader to this unique art.
Jogo do Pau is divided into 14 chapters:
1 - The History of Jogo do Pau
2 - Definitions
3 - Today's Jogo do Pau
4 - Single Combat Foundations
5 - Single Combat Attacks
6 - The Parries
7 - Combinations
8 - Single Combat
9 - Multiple Opponents
10 - Baton / Single-Handed Stick
11 - Art & Science of Teaching
12 - Sports Science
13 - Training Jogo do Pau
14 - A Personal View of Self-Defense
The book is also heavily illustrated with numerous photographs demonstrating the techniques of Jogo do Pau.
Whether one can learn a fighting art from a book may be open to debate, but one can certainly learn the basics of Jogo do Pau from this book. Having spent some time studying this book and learning the techniques of Jogo do Pau, I can say that it is quite possible to develop a strong set strikes, blocks, and parries using the traditional 5-foot Jogo do Pau stick or a bit shorter walking stick.
I enjoyed Jogo do Pau both as an introduction to a unique martial art, and as a means of adding to a gentleman's art of defense.
Highly Recommended.

Love this book! Finally an English language book on this art.Very straightforward, easy to follow, well edited, and very informative on Portuguese history as well.Being of both Filipino and Portuguese ancestry, with experience in Filipino stick methods I was anxious to see what the Portuguese had to offer and I was not disappointed.I would compare the baton part of jogo do pau closer to French le canne than Filipino arnis or Latin American garrote larense though.Perfect for those into western martial arts, medievel martial arts, stick and/or sword fighting,or Portuguese culture/history.

Here is an excellent book on the little known are of Jogo do Pau. The author has obviously dedicated a lot of time and effort in studying the art and finding the way to communicate about its value. I find the book very well conceived and realized. The order of presenting the information is meant to help the progress if you should try practicing the techniques, and I'd say it achieved that goal. Which is not a surprise, as the final section of the book is actually on the methods of training in aartial arts, and I think is a must read for any instructor of combative sports of fighting arts. It shows Mr. Preto's true understanding of his work and his genuine wish to give others an opportunity of taking advantage of his knowledge and expertise.

I'm currently rereading this book, and I'm glad I bought it. For someone interested in the western traditions of staff fighting, this book is definitely worth the price. What it teaches is how to use a 5 foot staff primarily for swinging strikes, with thrusts used to a minor extent. The system as presented here is fairly simple: strikes, parries, and (refreshingly) almost as much on strategy as on technique. There are also chapters on taking on multiple opponents (three techniques and strategies), and on mindset and training.
So, why four stars?
Mostly, it's a comment about production values. I was particularly intrigued by Figure 4.3, a three page montage of a changing hand parry that is never mentioned in the text. Despite the claim in the introduction that everything is being revealed, a close look at the pictures reveals several techniques that aren't discussed. To me, this is not a reason not to buy the book, but it is a comment on the quality of the editing.
Finally, I probably should comment on Mr. Preto's posture on the cover picture. Yes, he does always have his knee over his toe, and I've always been taught that was a no-no. In this book, he always has this posture, and even comments at one point that this is a book about effective stick-fighting, not healthy stick-fighting. While I won't argue with jogo do pau's effectiveness, I will point out that his teacher (the grand master of the system) and most of his fellow students use a more conventional posture, with the knee behind the toe where itbelongs. I would love to see a rewrite of this book in ten years, to see if Mr. Preto has changed any of his opinions.
As it stands, this is a fascinating book, and well worth the price. It is not perfect, and there is definitely room for a sequel.
