I am not the typical reader... in fact I wasn't a reader at all until I discovered Roncagliolo... Firstly I read "La Cuarta Espada" in about 1 week.. (record for me) and since I like Santiago's syle decided to get into Abril rojo... I have to say that it is a very good and catching book.. I beat my record and finish it in 5 days... Not bad for my very first 2 books read after school more than 10 years ago...
I'm buying PUDOR now...

A murder mistery in an Andean city is the frame to get the reader into the complex social diversity of Peru. Through this fascinanting story the reader is exposed to the feelings, wounds, and pain left by years of violence in Peru. Great read, chapters are ingeniously opened with paragraphs intentionally full of misspelled words written as they may sound in the local use of the spanish, presented as believable sections of official documents or letters written by the characters. I enjoyed reading this book, is a fine work that probes the author's talent, and put a face and feelings to the "invisible" people peruvians prefer to ignore or forget, victims or abusers.

Sucedieron cosas extrañas en el abril de 2000 en el Perú. Claro, hubo las elecciones generales que el "chino" Alberto Fujimori ganó por tercera vez.
Abimael Guzmán, el ex-líder de la organización terrorista Sendero Luminoso había sido capturado ya años atrás, en 1992 específicamente. Pero no obstante durante la Semana Santa del año 2000 ocurrieron asesinatos al estilo de esos extraños terroristas en Ayacucho, una ciudad ubicada en el sur del país, más o menos entre Cuzco y Lima.
El inofensivo y un poco pancho fiscal Félix Chacaltana Saldívar, protagonista de la novela, se encarga de los asesinatos.
A primera vista Chacaltana no parece ser un héroe pero durante la historia ficticia se convierte en uno. Pero primero tiene que distinguir claramente entre amigos, amigos que en realidad no los son y enemigos. Si consigue hacer esto tal vez puede sobrevivir y todas partes de su cuerpo quedaran intacto hasta el gran final...
¿Qué son los ingredientes de Abril Rojo? Bueno, el renacimiento senderista y la batalla no siempre limpia por parte del militar peruano contra los terroristas tiene un papel importante. También nos cuenta el autor algo sobre los problemas de los campesinos horrorizados que se encuentran exactamente entre las fuerzas del estado y los terroristas sin poder hacer nada aparentemente.
La novela también cuenta la historia del inverosímil héroe Chacaltana, un funcionario aparentemente muy leal y respetuoso a los leyes. Con Chacaltana el autor dibujó una carácter bastante interesante - aún no extraordinario.
En la novela también hay observaciones sobre la mitología y la práctica Cristiana. Pero el papel principal en mi opinión tiene la sangre y la violencia.
Aparte de esa ultima frase no es exactamente un libro solamente para los amantes de las novelas de terror. Al contrario, quien espera una novela de nivel bajo será decepcionado porque el autor, Santiago Roncagliolo escribió una novela muy fina y de muy alta calidad. Quien no tiene problemas con toda la sangre y los cuerpos mutilados le va a gustar mucho este libro. Yo daría 4.5 estrellas si Amazon eso permitiría. ¿4 o 5 estrellas? ¡ Entonces 5 !
