From the supplier: High-performance 80486-based DOS microcomputers such as Dell Computer Corp's 50-MHz 486 SE Towers are now able to be used in computer-aided engineering (CAE) research, which usually requires high-powered workstations that can cost in the range of $40,000. Georgia Technology Research Institute's Concepts Analysis Lab uses two 486 SE Towers in its CAE work with the Department of Defense for developing jammer-mode verification instruments (JMVI). Chief engineer Thomas Miller, Jr, selected the system for its speed and reliability. He says there have been no problems with the SE Towers mainly because Dell redesigned the system to handle the 50-MHz processor and did not rely on the same design used for 33-MHz processors as did some other computer vendors. Other companies' systems tend to overheat because of poor air circulation but the Dell system allows for increased air flow and does not have this problem.
