Product Description:
Men and women ARE different . . . and this book from the founder of gender medicine uncovers the neuroscientific reasons behind age-old disputes between men and women, while providing a groundbreaking, authoritative, and reader-friendly guide to resolving these differencesWhy won't he ask for directions? Why does she always want to talk about the relationship? Why can't he see that something is bothering her?* But perhaps the biggest questions Why Men Never Remember and Women Never Forget resolves are: Why is it so hard for men and women to understand each other . . . and what can we do about it?According to Dr. Marianne Legato, an internationally recognized expert in gender-specific medicine, male and female brains are chemically and structurally different. And scientists are now finding out how these differences cause us to approach problems and experience the world in such dissimilar ways.So how do we bridge this physiological gap? Dr. Legato provides strategies and tips for learning to 'think' like the other sex in order to get past our differences-and offers smart advice for dealing with issues wherever they arise. This trailblazing book will enable readers to understand each other-in both personal and professional relationships-like never before.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - Typically one-sided sexist pseudoscience
I get it - women are superior in every way, and even where men are shown to have some advantage (bigger brains), the female authors use this against them (problems in their larger brain's development) . Anyone reading this, do an internet search on 'men women grey white cells' - we've known for several years that men have about 10 TIMES as many grey cells, responsible for concentrated thinking, while women have more white cells for interconnectivity, and their grey matter is distributed around their brains. Thus women would seem to have a facility for multitasking. But a community of multitaskers would still be living in the Stone Age without the concentrated creativity of men. Creativity and multitasking are two ends of a pole - but female writers and pseudoscience researchers leave out this most vital point - the incredible lack of creativity of these supposed master multitaskers. But the most important point is that if you have creativity, you can invent a machine that multitasks more and better than billions of women put together. Now when women invent a better machine than us men, better multitasking computers and software, perhaps THEN they could think about opening their mouths to boast about dubious biological advantages. Be honest, the historical record of female creativity is embarrassing. Ignoring this, and trying to boost one's own ego to balance a major inferiority complex by knocking men is just embarrassing - and history will laugh at you as much as it laughs at the other dunces of history. This is pure literary garbage disguised as pseudoscience, but fit only for a People Magazine gossip column.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - A matter of chemistry
Based on the title alone, it's no surprise that this book is targeted towards a female audience. Specifically, it is written for those women who need more satisfying explanations as to why men just don't seem to get it. (OK, perhaps that's all of us?)

It turns out that many of the eternal and universal differences between the genders can be partially explained by differences in brain chemistry. For example, while estrogen magnifies oxytocin (aka, "the cuddle hormone"), testosterone actually neutralizes it. The effects of estrogen on brain functioning also explain why women--for better or worse--tend to remember more details (especially emotionally laden ones) than men, and also why women tend to respond to stress with "tend-and-befriend" strategy while men are more likely to use a flight-or-fight response.

Of course, brain chemistry can only go so far in offering a satisfying explanation between some of the uncanny differences between men and women. But, even if she will never forget any of the numerous times he reached for the remote instead of for her, perhaps a woman can now take comfort in the fact that the explanation may be more hormonal than it is personal.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Should be required reading
I skimmed this at the book store and couldn't put it down. It answered questions I didn't know I had about relating to women. If high school seniors read this book and Women's Reality by Anne Wilson Schaeff, couples would handle relationship drama a lot better.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Why I Keep Forgetting to Post This Review
Marianne Legato, an expert on gender specific medicine, writes how men and women's biological differences account for some psychological differences. Men and women tend to use different portions of their brains more and to release more of different hormones which tends to create differences in how men and women act in various activities. It is important that we understand and appreciate these differences, especially in medical senses as past research has tended to not realize that women have these different reactions.

Women are more apt to activate the armygdala section of the brain during stress which causes higher blood pressure and faster heart beats, thus making women more prone to stress. Women also tend to release greater amounts of the hormone oxytocin which motivates one to seek others for assistance. During stress, women are more apt to use both sides of the brain, which allows for more multitasking. Men tend to use one side of the brain and are better at handing events one at a time, which in some circumstances can be more efficient than multitasking. Women, thought, release more estrogen and activate more brain neurons during stress, which indicate they may feel stress more sharply. The structure of chromosomes of females makes them more apt to suffer from depression. These differences in chemical releases may partially explain why, of the 19 million with depression, 12 million are female. The chemical releases that tend to cause depression often occur after childbirth which leads to the little admitted reality that most mothers suffer some degree of depression within 10 days following giving birth.

As for bragging rights, men can claim to have larger brains and women may retort their brains are more efficient. Interestingly, male and female brains literally think differently. Females tend to be better at understanding the nuances of verbal communication and understanding the meaning of nonverbal cues such as facial expressions. Women tend to have a higher blood flow to the parts of the brain from which language functions. Thus, women have better recall of conversations.

It is important that we understand and recognize these differences. As many past medical studies used more male subjects, we are now learning it is wrong to assume that the responses of women to diseases and psychological experiences are the same as men experience. It is better that we discover what these differences are and we alter our medical and psychological assistance accordingly.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Public libraries who found 'Men Are From Mars' popular will find the same audience
Here's another excellent 'Men are From Mars' type expose of the underlying meaning of differences between the male and female psyche, this one explaining exactly how males and females are different - and how these differences, right down to brain processing and perception, affect common traits in both sexes. Science, psychology and medicine blend in a lively consideration of everything from cheating in marriage to differences in how men and women talk and problem-solve. Public libraries who found 'Men Are From Mars' popular will find the same audience will readily gravitate to WHY MEN NEVER REMEMBER AND WOMEN NEVER FORGET.
