Will's adventures continue in book two of John Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series, The Burning Bridge. This book was much like the very first one: full of action, adventure...and was just downright fun. There isn't much about this series that is deep or inquisitive, but that's part of the its appeal. The writing is easy to read, goes by fast, and has just the right balance between action and plot to keep the reader interested.
Burning Bridge follows the training of Will, an orphan who was apprenticed to a ranger in The Ruins of Gorlan. Will once again becomes involved with the the evil warlord Morgarath. But this time, Morgarath plans to make war on Will's homeland.
Will is joined by a disguised noblewoman named Evanlyn, and together the two discover that the armies of Morgarath are slowly infiltrating their home and plan to use their bridge to launch a full-scale invasion. In order to stop them, Will and Evanlyn burn down the bridge (hence the novel's title) to protect the kingdom from Morgarath's armies. However, the two are captured in the process, and the novel ends on a cliffhanger. Everyone has their own opinions about cliffhangers, and I'm not a big fan. They leave me full of anticipation for the subsequent installment so much so that I stalk Amazon and Wikipedia to find out when the book is being released.
Even though this book does not explore the mentor/student relationship as much as the last one, it reads just as easily and keeps the reader's interest throughout. There were a few small problems with maintaining viewpoint, but Burning Bridge was a major improvement on Ruins of Gorlan in this area.
This book is a fitting addition to the young adult fantasy apprentice genre. It's not the best one I've ever read, but it's still fun. I look forward to getting my hands on the subsequent book.

This action-packed story includes many things. The star character, Will puts himself in many dangerous places, and sometimes gets held hostage. I can't wait to read the subsequent book. Sometimes I am at school and I stay in at recess to finish reading a very exciting chapter.
I brought it to school one day and some of my friends wanted to read the beginning and so they did, and a few days later a few of them were almost done with the very first book! And then I went and got the subsequent book in the series they all wanted to read it too! No one can put one of these books down while they're reading one of the many amazing chapters.

I have been reading this series to my four children at bed time. It has captivated their attention as well as mine. We catch ourselves reading up to seven chapters some evenings. John Flannagan does a superior job holding our attention, plunging us into the story to the point that we don't want to put the book down. This is the second book in the series. It is well written. It puts my children on the edge of their beds, and I am captivated as well. Mr. Flannagan, is fantastic with character development. You feel as if you know Halt, Will, Horace, Baron Arald and Sir Rodney on a personal level. My children often reflect on qualities they share with the characters. The story line heightens with intrigue in every chapter. This is a must read series for young readers that have enjoyed the likes of Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia.

This whole series is absolutely fantastic. I would recommend it for ages 9 & up for level of understanding and interest. The books build on each other with a sort of "to be continued" at the end of each one, so make sure to get all together otherwise you'll be making multiple trips to the store or library. Although you won't find it cheaper anywhere else as Amazon has the best price.
The books are short and entertaining enough to be great as a vacation read for adults, yet just the right amount of pages to keep a boy happily engaged reading it for hours.
Each story follows the young hero, Will, who learns the values of integrity, hard-work and dedication. The characters throughout each of the stories are believable and thoroughly interesting. This author knows what he's doing! I won't disclose the story itself because Amazon has the "search inside" that gives you just the right amount of reading to spark an interest.

I haven't read it myself, but my 12-year-old son (who I almost always have to continually prompt to read something) was picking this up everyday on his own and reading much longer than he is usually willing to. This was not the case with the very first book in the series. He hasn't been this into a book since Harry Potter, and I've tried quite a few. I only hope the rest of the books in this series are as engaging.
