Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - A wonderful new heroine
I really loved nancy Springer book Rowan Hood about Robin Hoods daughter so when I heard about her books about Sherlock Holmes little sister I was excited!I was not let down ! This book was so good it had the feel of a shelock holmes book or movie! When Enola (alone spelled backwards) mother disappears she decides it is her job to find her running away when one of her brothers decides to send her to boarding school she runs into another mystery ! I will not say anymore as not to spoil this good story! My only problem was that her brothers mycroft and Sherlock are much older and they are not the nicest people although Sherlock seems to care much more then he lets on in the beginning! all around a breath of fresh air and i can't wait to read more of her adventures!

The Case of the Missing Marquess: An Enola Holmes MysteryI am a great fan of Sherlock Holmes and should be shocked at such liberties taken of my favourate(litary)friend but I ordered this book on a whim and was extreemly delighted with it. It was easy to read and though the senario is unlikely I can go along with it.I have passed it on to a friend and she has also enjoyed it.I highly recogmend it to all that are interested and adults can have a pleasant, interesting read as well as the intended audience. Buy it and have fun.

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - The Case of the Missing Marquess: An Enola Holmes Mystery
I love all aspects of mystery stories; the hunt for clues, the changes main characters go through during their search for the truth, all of it appeals to me. My fifth graders are always on the lookout for a good mystery as well. So . . . much like a detective, I spend a lot of time seeking out quality mysteries to recommend or read with my students. When I discovered that one of the world's greatest, most popular truth-seekers, Sherlock Holmes, had a younger sister, I was most intrigued.

Enola Holmes is not happy with the role society has given her. She's not pleased about the possibility of wearing corsets and attending boarding school, something her unaffectionate, free-thinking widowed mother is actually quite fond of. On the night before Enola's fourteenth birthday however, her mother disappears without a trace, leaving Enola no choice but to call in her famous brothers Mycroft and Sherlock to help pick up the pieces. After discovering her brothers' true intentions, Enola flees home as well, setting off for London to try and solve the mystery on her own. Where did Enola's mother run off to? Can Enola help Viscount Tewksbury, a missing young heir to a Duke? And why is Sherlock Holmes such a jerk?

After hearing nothing but rave reviews for this, (like comparisons to the classic "Westing Game"), I couldn't wait to dive in. I discovered quickly however, that this one wasn't going to live up to my expectations. I found myself detesting Enola from the beginning. Yes, I understand that part of her appeal is supposed to be her rebellious, non-conforming attitude. I just didn't get into it. I felt no emotion, no spark of personality from her character and I think it keeps this book and it's marvelous writing from becoming what it could have been.

She's not the only character that's flawed, in my opinion. Quite often in the book we are introduced to new characters too quickly, not provided with enough information regarding them, and then forced to follow them through the story as if we've known them and their motives all along. It seems as if Viscount, the two men that end up "kidnapping" him, even Mycroft and Sherlock, were rushed on paper. I get the feeling that Springer wanted to create a powerful, smart mouthed, young heroine in Enola, a Veronica Mars of her day and age, but spent so much time developing her, that the rest of the characters in the story fall flat. If Enola would've worked for me, I'd be more forgiving, but she didn't.

The City of London however, is brought to life beautifully and becomes a character all in itself in this novel. The dirtiness of the city is described perfectly and the inhabitants of London's dark back alleyways arm the book with an overabundant supply of creepiness. I was taken aback when Sherlock was portrayed the way he was, especially since I was hoping he'd be the book's saving grace, but I will say that I enjoyed the way Springer slowly unwrapped him, eventually showing us how different from Mycroft he truly was.

In the end, I just couldn't get into the story and I didn't care enough about Enola to really try. I thought smart, young girls, may eat this book up, but I regret to inform you that it still sits, even a few years after originally being published, collecting dust in our school library. Springer is talented and I may give her work another shot later down the road, but this particular series won't be floating anywhere near the top of my "To Read" list anytime soon.

Another great book in a wonderful series! You will enjoy this more than the first.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Sherlock Holmes's Little Sister
As other reviewers have pointed out there is no excuse for Enola's mother abandoning her. That said we can proceed with the fun of this book. Enola is a strong, smart girl who is learning and adapting to the strange situation she finds herself in. I love that! The reader and Enola both have to observe what is happening for a bit and then jump in. Mom has left, her big brothers are planning her future without any consideration of who Enola really is and what she wants, and Enola has to make choices quickly or have no choices. I love it! She tries things, makes scary mistakes, never gives up, and ultimately finds a place where she fits. I bought this book and several others of the series for several young girls on my Christmas list who often feel 'choiceless' and 'unrecognized'. And isn't that all of us, sometimes.
