Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Stonewood Heights is the perfect place to raise kids.  It’s got the proverbial good schools, solid values and a healthy real estate market.  It’s the kind of place where parents are involved in their children’s lives, where no opportunity for enrichment goes unexplored.

Ruth Ramsey is the human sexuality teacher at the local high school. She believes that “pleasure is good, shame is bad, and knowledge is power.”  Ruth’s younger daughter’s soccer coach is Tim Mason, a former stoner and rocker whose response to hitting rock bottom was to reach out and be saved.  Tim belongs to The Tabernacle, an evangelical Christian church that doesn’t approve of Ruth’s style of teaching.  And Ruth in turn doesn’t applaud The Tabernacle’s mission to take its message outside its doors.  Adversaries in a small-town culture war, Ruth and Tim instinctively mistrust each other. But when a controversy on the soccer field pushes the two of them to actually talk to each other, they are forced to take each other at something other than face value.

The Abstinence Teacher exposes the powerful emotions that run beneath the surface of modern American family life and explores the complex spiritual and sexual lives of ordinary people.  Elegantly written, it is characterized by the distinctive mix of satire and compassion that have animated Perrotta’s previous novels.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Another Lesson About the Burbs
This man really has a hate bag on for the suburbs.
Just as in "Little Children" two parents find their way into each other's lives.
Not as salacious as "Little Children" but still an excellent profile of adults trying to figure out what they want to be when they grow up. The writing is top notch and story is original, but I knocked off a star because the ending disappointed.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - An excellent commentary on the current American climate
I recently read "Little Children" and was interested in following it with some of Perrotta's other work. I found "The Abstinence Teacher" at the local library and was not disappointed. The story is about two people from different worlds who are attracted to each other despite their differences. I thought the book was well written and encompassed not only the battle between church and state but the battle to do what is right. I think all of the characters are written very well. I thought Perrotta was able to write very believable characters who faced problems of all shapes and sizes, making them very realistic and easy to relate to. Even his secondary characters were round and fleshed out. I thought the plot was interesting and I enjoyed the author's style. One reason I like Perrotta so much is that he is not formulaic. I could not see what was coming, and that is why I enjoyed the book. I think the ending was a little contrived but it still made for a good read and an entertaining afternoon.

Rated by buyers 2 out of 5 stars - 1.5 out of 5: Entertaining but predictable and lacking substance
This book explores the thematic crossroads of sexuality, abstinence, sex education, and religion in the context of a small-town battle between religious zealots and a pragmatic sex educator. The plot is simplistic and entirely predictable. Indeed, I don't recall a single thing happening in the book that I hadn't already predicted. This story and the way it is presented is not likely to challenge your preconceived ideas regarding sexuality, sex education, or anything else. The ending was extremely unsatisfactory in its incompleteness. The best I can say about this book is that it didn't annoy me that much and was mildly entertaining at times. Unless you are looking for an undemanding, quick reading experience, skip this one.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - welcome back TOM!
First of all, this book is being hit with many bad reviews simply for daring to portray christian characters with all their flaws...
the thing is, EVERYBODY in this book is portrayed with all their flaws and their virtues, and their troubled lives.
It's still classic Perrotta in the sense that there are no easy answers, it's all complicated and extremely interesting at the same time.
Perrotta has great insight into his characters and this book serves to question stereotypes, all kinds of stereotypes without taking sides.
If it's a little frustrating, well that's because it is true to life, which is never grey and white.
A great read.. and though i could feel the author trying to not repeat himself i really enjoyed it.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Raises a Lot of Questions
One of the best things about "The Abstinence Teacher" was how the two opposing characters were presented. Even balanced, to the point both sides came across equally zealous and nutty in their beliefs.

Once Perrotta brought us to this point, with clear grey and white battle lines drawn, he did something I wasn't expecting: He grayed the scene. The antagonists slowly grew closer to each others' position, experiencing all the doubt and uncertainty of human existence.

My only complaint about "The Abstinence Teacher" is the fact many issues raised throughout the book are still open questions by the end. While I tend to like my fiction wrapped up in a neat package, perhaps Perrotta's real gift IS how he leaves so many blanks, forcing the reader to work out answers for themselves according to their own moral code.

A thought provoking, pleasant, and at times sexy read. I'd recommend this to anyone who is facinated by the conservative/liberal debate taking place across the country and how it translates from rhetoric to real life.
