Product Description:
The Viking invaders came from across an icy sea, taking lady Brenna as their captive. But the dauntless Celtic beauty swears that no barbarian will ever be her master -- not even the handsome and powerful brute Garrick Haardrad.
The son of a ruthless Viking cheiftan, Garrick is accustomed to getting his way, as he claims his exquisite 'prize' with a primative abandon that leaves Brenna breathless. Yet it is Garrick's gentle soul that undoes the lady's resolve. For even as she plots the vengeance she vowed, Brenna cannot ignore the wonder of his kisses -- or douse the flames of a newly lit passion that blazes like starfire through the cold Nordic nights.

This book is amazing! Johanna Lindsey is amazing. This superb book is a must read. If I can go back in time to meet my Viking, it would be Garrick. The whole story of it is sad then the whole juicy part of it comes together. I can't but feel sad at times but at the end it is wonderful. Recommended for people in relationships with trust issues. A must read.

I read Hearts Aflame before reading this one, which is why I picked it up. However, this book completely disappointed me. This is the story of Kirsten's parents, and it is totally opposite their daughters story. In Heart's Aflame the two characters start off on the wrong foot, and the author does show and mention the brutality of the time period, but not to the extremes of this book.
In this book the two characters hate each other the entire time, and one is always angry with the other. By the end of the book, even I was worn out and angry with them. He rapes her, she spites him, and around it goes. The ending seemed as if it was meant to be different. The main characters could have potentially never seen each other again, and it would have made perfect sense. Only after she has the child, and is about to leave is any progress made in their relationship at all.
If you liked Hearts Aflame, skip this book, and you will remain so much happier.

I have read & enjoyed lots of Lindsey books and this had to be the worst. Too much rape, selling & raping slaves, and then even more rapes. Who would like this hero? Having raped the heroine - he is despicable. I lost all respect for the heroine (and the author) when she wanted the hero to continue on after he raped her (because of course she started to enjoy the rape) but unfortunately he was incapable because he had already "spilled his seed." Yuck!

This book is hands down the best medieval romance I have ever read! Lady Brenna was abducted from her country by viking invaders. She was given to Garrick Hardard by his farther to be his slave. Garrick who hates women because his past love chose A rich fat merchant to marry instead of him, wants nothing to do with her. Brenna only has one mission and that's to kill Garrick's farther for the injustice he bought to her people. If A book was really good, sometimes I read it again years later, but to my surprise some of them does not impress me the way they did when I very first read them. This was the second time I read "Fires Of Winter" and it did not fail me. The characters are well developed. The storyline was excellent and the sex scences were great. I was never bored for A second! I wish Johanna Lindsey would write more medieval romances like this, and "Hearts Aflame" again!

I read this book years ago and fell in love with the two main characters, Garrick Haardrad and Lady Brenna. It was also because of this book that I fell in love with the Viking culture and the time period; the early middle ages.
Recently I took this book off the shelf and read it again. Quite a few scenes in the book stayed in my memory even after 27 years. I don't think I will ever forget the combat between Garrick and Brenna. Both are strong willed characters. There are a few rape scenes in the book that I'm sure some people will find objectable but I don't fault the author for writing them because let's face facts...during viking times there was quite a bit of that happening.
There were parts in the book that had me in tears simply for the fact that I could feel the anguish of the two characters, who were both stubborn. Garrick in some ways wanted Brenna to be like other "normal" women and Brenna wanted Garrick to accept the fact that she was never going to be like other women.
Some reading this book might find Brenna "childish" in the way she behaved but I would call it proud. She was proud of how she was raised and there wasn't anything or anyone who would make her cower, certainly not a viking, no matter how large he was. And Garrick, for being as big as he was and intimating as he could appear, not to mention having issues with the female sex in general (mainly due to the fact that he was spurned by one in the past) had a tender heart. He just didn't want to have it broken again and who can blame him? So he resists the feelings he begins having for his strong willed captive all throughout the book. As for Brenna, she wants to be free again and never submits to being a slave no matter how much she loves the man who she's been given to.
It's a riviting book from the very first page to the last and one I will always remember and read again and again.
