Editor's Notes and Comments:

Product Description:
Isaac Asimov's Foundation novels are one of the great masterworks of science fiction. As unsurpassed blend of nonstop action, daring ideas, and extensive world-building, they chronicle the struggle of a courageous group of men and women dedicated to preserving humanity's light in a galaxy plunged into a nightmare of ignorance and violence thirty thousand years long.

After years of struggle, the Foundation lies in ruins—destroyed by the mutant mind power of the Mule. But it is rumored that there is a Second Foundation hidden somewhere at the end of the Galaxy, established to preserve the knowledge of mankind through the long centuries of barbarism. The Mule failed to find it the very first time—but now he is certain he knows where it lies.

The fate of the Foundation rests on young Arcadia Darell, only fourteen years old and burdened with a terrible secret. As its scientists gird for a final showdown with the Mule, the survivors of the First Foundation begin their desperate search. They too want the Second Foundation destroyed…before it destroys them.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - The end of a great trilogy
The finale of one of the greatest trilogies of all time, Second Foundation is the very first book which centers around the mysterious Second Foundation. Like the previous book, it's actually two different stories set many years apart.

The very first story covers the Mule and his search for the only enemy which could stop his domination of the galaxy, the Second Foundation. The second story concludes the fight for supremacy between the two Foundations Hari Seldon set up. And the questions of the true location of the Second Foundation and who runs it are finally answered.

The shortest of the original trilogy at 304 pages, it may be the best. This is the only third book in a trilogy I've ever read which could surpass the first, the mystery surrounding the Second Foundation keeps you guessing. Everyone should read the original Foundation trilogy, even those who aren't fans of sci-fi.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Brilliant conclusion to the original trilogy
In this book, the third of the original "Foundation" novels, Asimov continues to shine. This book is even stronger than its two predecessors, which are masterpieces in themselves. Asimov has again created memorable characters, a whirlwind plot and relentless action. In this novel, however, even Asimov reaches new heights regarding the series of plot twists leading up the book's conclusion, which will leave you breathless. This book is simply incredible in every way and is essential reading for all sci-fi fans. Highly recommended.

Rated by buyers 4 out of 5 stars - Excellent
Second Foundation (despite its title) is the third part of the original Foundation trilogy by Isaac Asimov, and it's a hell of a good book, as well as an extremely bleak book in its portrayal of the human future. The very first part, Search By The Mule, published as Now You See It... in the January, 1948 edition of Astounding Science Fiction, concerns the search for the Second Foundation of Hari Seldon by the mutant who has conquered almost the whole of the galaxy within a few years, including the First Foundation, by dint of his ability to control the emotions of individuals. Each chapter within this section ends with an antichoros section told from the point of view of the First Speaker (of the Speakers ruling body) of the Second Foundation, as he monitors the goings on.... Overall, Asimov's masterpiece (the trilogy) is one of the bleakest works of art ever put forth. While there are great characterizations within, it all seems futile, to the point that fatalism renders even seemingly tragic heroes into moot gray pawns. Most characters are even alienated from alienation. The Second Foundationers seem in firm control, the First Foundationers believe they are, having seemingly rooted out the Second Foundation's threat, and the subject peoples of the galaxy seem contented to let the Psychohistorical plan play out about them. Could this be more apt to many current belief systems- political, religious, philosophic? The only bright side that the trilogy leaves the reader is to be found in not the Mule, himself, but in what he represents- the living embodiment of the Fallacy Of Uninterrupted Trends. Somewhere in the future of the galaxy there has to be an even greater, and higher speed bump for the Second Foundation, and in that bump could lay human salvation. Isaac Asimov's trilogy is not just a science fiction masterpiece, but one of the great works of fiction, period. Yes, there are dated attitudes and science, but the trends and actions of the tale's players are recognizable from far off. And that is because they are not so distant, after all. In such parallax is great art given life. Breathe it.

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Fun Fun Fun
Great book! Third in the series of three novels, all three are worth the read. I read all three in about two and half weeks. It might be interesting to read them in conjunction with Kuhn's Structures of Scientific Revolutions. Every "Seldon Crisis" brings about a "new world". Really fun stuff. Don't miss out!

Rated by buyers 3 out of 5 stars - Tentative ending begs for sequel; Asimov obliges
The original finale of the Foundation trilogy that Asimov eventually expanded on both ends, this installment has a little more plot interest, but suffers from a tentative ending, as if Asimov knew he would revisit it,

He did, many years later, with Foundation's Edge (Foundation Novels) and Forward the Foundation (Foundation Novels).
