Editor's Notes and Comments:
Product Description:
In this new historical investigation, German historian Jens Weste-meier portrays the rise and fall of an SS war criminal, and demolishes persistent myths of a Nazi icon. The picture revealed here is at odds with the popular Peiper mythology created by wartime and contemporary National Socialist propaganda, novels, motion pictures, and right-wing Peiper biographies. Using primary sources and personal interviews, a compelling image of the SS colonel emerges. The result is a highly readable and scholarly account with the very first complete picture of Joachim Peiper. Now, a previously little understood Waffen-SS icon comes to life in a book that is at once an important contribution for our understanding of World War II history, as well as the place of the Waffen-SS in Hitler's Third Reich.

In a very well documented book Jens Westermeier writes a great biography of Joachim Peiper, a man that is presented as a hero by right wing extremists, neo nazis and denialists. The author highlights what Peiper himslef and his numerous hagiographies try scrupulously to hide since more than 60 years. Joachim Peiper was a great buddy of Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler. During years, as a convinced nazi and SS, he worked close to Himmler and he ignored nothing of the crimes perpetrated by the Einsatzgruppen on the East front. It is also likely that he has been informed by Himmler himself or his other high level contact persons within the SS organisation of what happened in the extermination camps.
As a soldier, despite all the propaganda that has been made around his name, Westermeier shows that Peiper was by far not exceptional, contrary to what the admirers of the SS men - like as, for instance, Agte - try to make us swallow. It is also clear that the units under Peiper's command were involved in numerous war crimes on the East and Western front, where the Malmedy massacre is only the best known.
Finally, Peiper remained his all life long a convinced nazi who tried to create an image of himself, of the nazi regime and of the SS that has nothing to do whith the reality. Far from being white knights defending the West and exceptional soldiers, Peiper and his men where in fact a bunch of criminals who devoted their lifes to the most pervert ideology ever.
A must read.

This is an excellent history of one of the leading personalities of the Waffen-SS. I cannot understand why previous reviewers have rated this book so poorly. It is extremely well researched. It seems to be that any books that give a negative view of the Waffen-SS (such as Valhalla's Warriors by Goldsworthy) come in for sustained, but unwarranted criticism.
Buy this book. It will give you the warts and all story of Peiper and doesm't candy coat it with the pure military acheivments.
The simple truth is that the Waffen-SS was a criminal organisation that committed some of the worst genocide seen in recent history. It is an undeniable fact that Peiper was part of this.

This is a defamation of a somewhat silly sort, easy to get away with as the victim Peiper is no longer alive to bring a lawsuit, having been murdered by Communists who never forgot nor forgave his monumental efforts at preventing the tender mercies of Stalin's Thugs from prevailing over all of Europe in World War Two.
However, the sloppy, dishonest, and slanderous case this "Author" makes just does not stick, because Westemeier is very transparant that he has a very heavy, though dull, axe to grind.

I have to agree with the above reviewer in saying this book is complete rubbish! The book is filled with generalizations about the motivation of the Waffen SS soldiers based on one or two veterens views. Any commentary that contradicts the author's belief that the Waffen SS was anything more than a loose band of idealogical fanatics with absolutely no military acumen are dismissed as "apologetic" views or attempts by the HIAG and veterens to cover up the heinous crimes committed. And what heinous crimes? The author makes claims about war crimes but does not back them up with any real facts. It is funny, each chapter has at least 50 footnotes that do not really say anything. My favorite part is when the author says that the Waffen SS soldiers sabotaged their own equipment during the Ardennes Offensive in an act of defiance to their leaders yet has absolutely no proof this occurred.
Patrick Agte's book is the definitive work on Peiper. This book is awful, plain and simple!
I have many Schiffer books and they are generally well researched and unbias. This book is an abomination and may wind up in my fireplace when it gets cold.

This is very bias and a reprint of the 1996 JOACHIM PEIPER 1915 - 1976 written by the same author who was caught given himself the only favourable review.
If your are generally interested in this subject PATRICK AGTE wrote a book called JOCHEN PEIPER has full details from birth until his murder at the hands of communists in France in 1976.
