Released more than a decade past its peak in popularity, Pearl Jam proves it still has what it takes to captivate an audience with the concert film Immagine in Cornice. Culled from footage taken throughout the band's 2006 tour of Italy, the film captures the preternaturally youthful Eddie Vedder mesmerizing audiences with his full, rich voice. One of grunge music's defining bands, Pearl Jam continues to produce new music but isn't afraid to rest on its laurels. Unlike some groups that refuse to perform 'oldies' for their fans, this DVD shows that fans are treated to hits such as 'Alive,' 'Even Flow,' and 'Better Man,' as well as an incendiary cover of their buddy Neil Young's 'Rockin' in the Free World.' Directed by Danny Clinch, who exhibits a keen eye for capturing a live concert experience, Immagine offers peeks backstage, as well as moments that are both charming and calculated, such as Vedder learning to speak a few Italian phrases to win over the crowd (Not that the fans needed to be won over). There are a handful of groups that can play sold-out venues without having a record at the top of the charts, and Pearl Jam--an incredibly seasoned live band--is one of them. The songs sound crisp and the musicians (guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, bassist Jeff Ament, drummer Matt Cameron, organist Boom Gaspar) look as though they are having the time of their lives. While not as compelling as Jim Jarmusch's 'Year of the Horse,' which documented Neil Young's 1996 tour of the same name, Immagine in Cornice is a thoughtful look at a thought-provoking and still relevant band. --Jae-Ha Kim

It was like I was standing in the crowd in Italy. Great made DVD and the band is better than ever.

As a guitar player, my only gripe is that McReady plays his strat on only a few of the tunes shown here... I swear to the maker he's just more of an animal when he straps that beat-up old instrument on. But that aside, Vedder is and has been king of lead singers for the past decade or so: excellent stage presence with a humble and heartfelt demeanor and always a clever way of phrasing his thoughts... (as if people aren't aware of that by now).
I'm very much a hard rock / screaming guitar fan, but Pearl Jam has grown on me over the years. Despite that this is only the 2nd item of theirs I've purchased (the other being Ten, go figure). What I like about this is it's for the most part songs that even casual fans will recognize, and for the most part they're all up tempo tunes, except for one or two, which happen to be among their most clutch and timeless numbers so are welcome additions even for casual fans.
It's not one concert beginning to end, which sometimes is preferable, but the way they put it together, going from town to town and discussing more of what goes on behind the scenes: it's really an excellent DVD. Hard core fans will simply love it because you're wanting all that stuff. But as a casual fan, I can also say that aspect is not over the top: musically it absolutely rocks.

I like this more every time I watch it. I only wish there were more songs on it. The music is great, the footage with band members talking and checking out Italy is great.

In a word, this DVD is "perfect"... the song list is simply awesome and the performances are top notch! Video quality is superb on HD tv's... you could swear it's from an HD source... even coming from a standard DVD. Short video sequences of Italy are breathtaking, even romantic. DVD packaging is definitely what you'd come to expect from PJ.
If you were to choose from one of the several PJ DVD's out there, this would be your best choice. I loved it... probably PJ's best DVD out there... to date.

with this dvd you get an inside view at how pearl jam tours and see how energizing their shows are. you get to hear some concerts with rocking songs like severed hand and an acoustic lukin, and soft and beautiful songs like immortality. you also get to see how awesome the band is (like when mike gives autographs to some italian locals) and how lovely their family is (like little olivia). it's like touring band and single video theory combined. this dvd is a must-have for any pearl jam fan out there!
