This book is designed as a curriculum manual for instructors in courses for paediatricians, on substance abuse. Offering a 'family systems' approach to alcohol and other drug issues, the manual describes teaching activities that have been extensively pilot-tested by the authors and others. The authors begin by defining a minimal role for all paediatric health-care providers in working with patients and their families and show ways in which providers may increase this role. They then offer six separate teaching modules, which combine information taken from actual case descriptions with practical hints on teaching methodology from successful courses at Johns Hopkins.
