From the author: The relationship between assessment center performance ratings and the age of candidates was examined. Participants included 80 candidates from an advanced management assessment center and 146 candidates from a middle management assessment center. Significant negative correlations were found between age and ratings in both assessment centers, even after controlling for education, years of service, gender and, in the advanced management assessment center, cognitive ability. Furthermore, t-tests showed that candidates age 40 and over received significantly lower ratings than candidates younger than 40. Possible causes and implications of these findings are discussed.
