Judson Philips AKA Hugh Pentecost was a prolific writer of detective novels and short stories. Of the 20+ novels and 20+ short stories of his that I have read, none stands out as memorable. Plots are OK; characters are cardboard; and the author gets "preachy" at times.
"The Judas Freak" is typical. The story begins with a celebrity's career being endangered by anonymous letters hinting of some scandal in his past. The protagonist, series character Julian Quist PR genius, gets involved. Murders occur fast and furious. Detection is minimal. Climax and conclusion right out of a low-budget TV show.
Great detective fiction? No. Good detective fiction? No. Entertaining, easy reading? Yes.
